Puppy mills are horrible places. They are where dogs are bred in small cages for years on end. Most of the dogs have never even seen grass. They are starved and lack any entertainment. The dogs don't have toys. They are cramped in small dirty cadges. And puppy mills are all over the world. Puppy mills have been around for a long time. They started in the 1960s when people wanted cheap pure breed dogs. Although people are well aware of them, people are doing nothing about the fact. Most people don't care because it does not directly affect them.
Currently there are more than 5,000 active puppy mills in the U.S.A. And from those 5,000 puppy mills 2.6 million puppies are sold each year. And most of those dogs are sick, but they are still sold. The dogs get parasites, worms, cuts and bruises from the puppy mills. And places that sell those puppies don't tell anyone about their sickness. They just sell them, make money, and do it again.
Puppies are not even the soal problem of puppy mills. You might think that, but the puppies are just a fraction of the problem. The main problem is that female dogs are suffering. They are stuffed in small, dirty, rusty, smelly, hard and cramped cages. Most of the time they are sick. The dogs will have crusty eyes, old cuts and broken bones. They will stay in these cages for years, until they can't breed anymore. Then they are killed because to the puppy mills they have no more use.
Petland. The worst place of all. If you have pets you have heard of it. Petland is not a good place. They sell puppies from puppy mills and mistreat their pets. Pulling straight from The Humane Society: “Dead animals (mostly puppies and/or bunnies) were found in freezers at all five stores where investigators were able to inspect freezers, indicating Petland sometimes lets sick and injured animals die in its stores rather than seeking veterinary care.” Petland sells puppys from puppy mills for 2,000 to 10,000. They don't care about their pets. It's just money for them.
If you feel sad about these dogs you can help. First of all you can stop buying from Petland. You can also inform others about puppy mills. But one of the most effective ways to help is to donate to places that help them stop puppy mills. You can donate to the Humane society, Peta or ASPCA. Will you help?
